Michael Carrick expects to lead Man Utd against Roma despite slump
United's head coach says he will be in charge on Tuesday after a defeat at Stamford Bridge extended their winless run.
Manchester-free of victories in nine matches across all competitions, Man Utd are enduring their worst run since 1988-89, yet head coach Michael Carrick expects to keep his job.
Asked by TNT Sports whether he would be in charge for the Roma game, Carrick answered simply: "Yeah." Pressed further on his future, he said he was focused on preparing the players for the midweek fixture.
The latest setback came at Stamford Bridge, where Lisandro Martinez committed two fouls in little more than a minute that left United a goal down twice over and a man short. Darren Cann, a former World Cup final official, told BBC Sport the defender was rightly dismissed and had given away a needless penalty. Carrick said the second goal and the red card had a major bearing on the outcome.
Former Chelsea and England midfielder Joe Cole said on TNT Sports that the Argentina international's time at the club had run its course. Martinez will also miss next Sunday's Premier League match against Aston Villa through suspension.
Despite the slump, the travelling supporters sang Carrick's chant as he applauded the away end at full-time, and the coach said the fans had been "absolutely amazing". According to BBC Sport, United are close to dropping into the relegation zone for the first time since Sir Alex Ferguson's early days.
