Martínez red card deepens Manchester United slump against Chelsea
The defender's dismissal left Michael Carrick's side a man down as their winless run stretched on.
Lisandro Martínez was sent off as Manchester United lost 2-0 to Chelsea on Saturday, a result that left them without a win since early September.
The defender drove his arm into Wesley Fofana's neck after the hosts took a corner from the right, with the ball nowhere near the pair, according to The Guardian. Sky Sports described the offence as an elbow on Fofana.
Morgan Rogers had broken the deadlock in the 48th minute, dinking his finish over goalkeeper Senne Lammens as he came off his line. With United reduced to ten men, Cole Palmer then converted the penalty that sealed the game.
Bruno Fernandes had returned to the starting XI, yet the visitors struggled down their right, where Estevão Willian gave Diogo Dalot a difficult afternoon.
The pressure on manager Michael Carrick is growing, and The Guardian questioned how much longer United would keep losing under him rather than under a successor. His side have also gone out of the Carabao Cup and sit 20th in the Champions League table.
An international break is due soon, offering the club a pause before their next fixture.
