Diogo Dalot believes Manchester United's comeback against Roma in the Champions League on Tuesday can change their season and showed unhappy supporters that the players care. The defender said such nights can shift momentum and seasons.

United trailed 2-0 at half-time and were booed off, before Bruno Fernandes scored with a retaken penalty and Matheus Cunha struck twice late to seal a 3-2 win. Dalot said the message at the break was that the side were getting disappointed too quickly.

He said these moments are really tough and the only way out is by winning football games. He added that the Roma night gives extra confidence and that it matters for everyone around the club to feel they care and want to turn things around.

The win came against a backdrop of anger at the Glazer family, who have owned United since 2005 and loaded £1.2bn of debt onto the club. Before kick-off at Old Trafford there was another protest, with thousands of green and gold balloons released from the Stretford End, and tennis balls were thrown on to the pitch when the clock showed 20 minutes and five seconds.

Dalot, now in his ninth season as a United player, has been forced to play at left-back because Luke Shaw is injured, and has been a target for social media abuse. He said Carrick had told him to play high and that United knew Roma would play man-to-man. Roma had scored through Matias Soulé after Kobbie Mainoo lost the ball in central midfield.

Dalot said that, analysed coldly, United had nothing more to lose, and that once the energy builds inside the stadium it is hard for opponents to create a chance. United face Aston Villa at Old Trafford on Sunday, with seven points from their opening nine Premier League games.
