Kuyt calls Fenerbahce's win over Liverpool another Istanbul miracle
The interim head coach saw his side come from behind twice to claim their first Champions League victory of the season.
Dirk Kuyt described Fenerbahce's 3-2 Champions League win over Liverpool on Wednesday as "another miracle in Istanbul", after his side came from behind twice. The interim head coach said the night was special for him and for everyone who loves the club.
Goals from Mason Greenwood, Archie Brown and Vedat Muriqi delivered the Turkish side's first Champions League win of the season. It was also their first victory in any competition for four games. Kuyt said the win was not luck and that his team deserved it.
Kuyt compared the comeback to the Reds' Champions League final win over AC Milan in 2005, a year before he joined the English club. He said the players told each other to stick together, to be united and to keep believing, lessons he took from Liverpool. He added that he was very happy with all the players and everyone involved.
Kuyt took charge last week after Ismail Kartal resigned following a 2-1 defeat to rivals Galatasaray. Fenerbahce sit sixth in the Turkish Super Lig and have lost four of their opening 10 games. Kuyt said that although the situation is very difficult, there is a chance to bring another miracle in Istanbul.
Former Newcastle midfielder Emre Belözoğlu was announced as the club's new permanent manager on Tuesday night. Kuyt said Belözoğlu wished him well and that he promised a good performance to give the new manager a good start.
