Manchester United are unlikely to appoint another interim head coach if they decide to replace Michael Carrick in the coming weeks, according to Sky Sports News. Sky Sports' Rob Dorsett reports that the club are understood to have no plans for a temporary appointment should Carrick leave.

There is still support for Carrick among the United hierarchy, along with a lingering concern that changing the head coach would not necessarily change the team's fortunes. It is thought United would rather avoid repeating the interim process as they pursue a longer-term strategy for their most important football role.

Jason Wilcox and Omar Berrada, who run United's football operations, are still considering other options should they feel a change is needed. Carrick was given the job on a two-year basis in May, after a strong spell as interim head coach that secured Champions League football.

The Champions League victory over Roma was United's first win in 10 matches in all competitions. They remain 17th in the Premier League, outside the relegation places on goal difference alone.

Super Sunday's game against Aston Villa at Old Trafford is seen as a key one for Carrick's future, with the international break next week offering a chance to reassess.
