Manchester City could spend the next two seasons in the Championship, according to a report in the Daily Mail. The outlet states that the Premier League intends to act before the outcome of the club's appeal is known.

The reported sanctions follow a guilty verdict on 100 charges of breaching financial rules, which has overshadowed City's perfect start to the campaign. The alleged offences cover a near 10-year period between 2009 and 2018.

The Daily Mail reports that the points deduction would be large enough to guarantee relegation to the second tier for the first time since 2001. A substantial fine is also expected, and a deduction could carry into the 2027/2028 season, limiting any immediate return.

City maintain their innocence and have already lodged an appeal against the verdict. The club has not commented on the reported sanctions.
