Manchester United keep Michael Carrick in charge for Chelsea trip
The head coach will lead the side at Stamford Bridge, though no timescale has been placed on the decision.
Manchester United have decided that Michael Carrick will stay in charge for Saturday's Premier League visit to Chelsea, even though they are hovering just above the relegation zone.
United sources confirmed on Tuesday that he would lead the team at Stamford Bridge, although BBC Sport reported that no timescale has been attached to the decision. Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville said he was surprised but happy with the call: "I was absolutely certain that what I witnessed on Sunday would be the end of Michael."
Carrick came under pressure after the heavy defeat at Como, when captain Bruno Fernandes publicly questioned his tactics. Fernandes was then left on the bench for Sunday's 0-3 home defeat by AFC Bournemouth, a result that dropped the side to 16th.
United arrive without a win in eight matches in all competitions, while Xabi Alonso's Chelsea sit fifth in the league despite losing at home to Tottenham in their latest outing.
Omar Berrada and Jason Wilcox were at the training ground discussing what should happen in the short term. According to BBC Sport, Eddie Howe and Julian Nagelsmann were among the options the club considered, and former Chelsea boss Antonio Conte is open to talks about the job, although there has been no direct contact.
Carrick, who said after the Bournemouth loss that he was carrying on as normal, is due to speak to the media on Thursday. Once the Chelsea match is over, his side meet Roma in the Champions League on Tuesday and then take on Aston Villa before the international break.
