Carrick and Fernandes clear the air before Chelsea trip
The Manchester United captain may return to the starting side after private talks with his head coach at the training ground.
Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes could start against Chelsea in the Premier League on Saturday after private talks with head coach Michael Carrick to settle their differences. The two men met at the club's training base on Tuesday to air their issues, according to BBC Sport.
Fernandes was left on the bench without coming on against Bournemouth after questioning Carrick's tactics following a 4-1 Champions League defeat by Como. Asked whether the approach was to blame, the Portuguese replied: "That's on the manager and on the staff to see it, it's not on me."
Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville said that Fernandes had let himself down, while also crediting him with contributing more to the club than any other player over recent years. Sky Sports News reported that the captaincy would stay with Fernandes, although Carrick declined to rule out disciplinary action at his press conference before the Bournemouth game.
Many had anticipated Carrick's dismissal after that defeat, but the board chose to give the 45-year-old time to recover the situation despite the side sitting 16th in the league. BBC Sport added that the club have nonetheless drawn up a shortlist of possible successors featuring Eddie Howe and Julian Nagelsmann.
One squad member told BBC Sport: "The feeling is that we all want to put it right." Carrick also welcomed Kobbie Mainoo back to training after a fortnight out injured, ahead of the trip to Stamford Bridge, which kicks off at 12:30 GMT.
