Tottenham's Premier League victory at Chelsea on Saturday evening was their first win without conceding at Stamford Bridge in any competition since December 1986. Spurs had won only once in their previous league trips to the ground, under Mauricio Pochettino.

The goals came from a freak own goal by Mike Penders and a solo effort from Mathys Tel, who carried the ball from deep before finishing. Yet the visitors created little from their territory, recording one of the poorest returns of chances from final-third entries by any side in a league game this season.

The more lasting change came in midfield, where summer signing Mateus Fernandes started at the base for the first time, alongside fellow arrival Sandro Tonali. According to The Guardian, Fernandes had more touches than any player has managed in an away league match this season.

Tottenham had arrived in the relegation zone, with their only previous win coming against promoted Coventry, despite heavy summer spending to reshape the squad around Roberto De Zerbi's ideas. "We are improving a lot," the head coach said after the win.

The result leaves Spurs three points above the relegation zone but, suddenly, two points off the top six. Their upcoming fixtures, starting with Crystal Palace at home, form the kindest run in the division by the Opta Power Rating of their opponents, The Guardian reported.
