Howe emerges as option to succeed Carrick at Manchester United
Former players are split over the ex-Newcastle manager, whose compensation fee is falling as the club weigh their next move.
Manchester United face a decision on Carrick's future, with Saturday's Premier League match against Chelsea likely to influence how the club proceed, according to BBC Sport. Howe has emerged as a potential successor, though the idea has drawn a negative response in some quarters.
Sections of the fanbase have argued on social media that Howe lacks the stature to replace Carrick. Former United players Paul Scholes and Nicky Butt stopped short of endorsing the 48-year-old on their podcast, despite supporting his appointment when Ruben Amorim was sacked in January.
Others are more enthusiastic, with ex-captain Roy Keane backing Howe as a possible successor. Darren Bent, Gareth Barry and Jack Wilshere have also put his name forward for the role.
Cost is a factor, because Carrick, the former Middlesbrough boss, and his staff would have to be paid off if he leaves. Newcastle agreed a compensation arrangement for Howe that shrinks over time, BBC Sport reported, and the figure began at £6m before halving. Those payments are due to expire before the end of the season, at which point he could be appointed without a fee.
The call rests with chief executive Omar Berrada, sporting director Jason Wilcox and director of recruitment Christopher Vivell. Given what the club have spent on hiring and firing managers, BBC Sport said Berrada and Wilcox may want to limit costs.
United go into the fixture 16th in the Premier League, without a win in their last five matches. Kick-off against Chelsea is at 19:30 Thai time on Saturday.
